La mayoría de las personas ha experimentado alguna vez un "deja vu", que consiste en la extraña sensación de haber vivido algo antes.
Ahora, investigadores identificaron la parte del cerebro responsable de estos episodios y creen que el hallazgo conduciría a nuevos tratamientos para condiciones relacionadas con la memoria.
Los expertos dijeron que las neuronas de un centro nervioso del cerebro llamado hipocampo hacen un mapa mental de los nuevos lugares y experiencias, y luego los almacenan para su uso futuro.
Pero cuando dos experiencias comienzan a parecerse mucho, estos mapas mentales se solapan y empiezan a hacerse borrosos.
"Un "deja vu" ocurre cuando esta capacidad es desafiada", dijo Susumu Tonegawa, profesor de Biología y Neurociencia del Instituto de Tecnología de Massachusetts, en Cambridge, cuyo trabajo fue publicado en la revista "Science".
Es simplemente un mal funcionamiento de la capacidad del cerebro para clasificar información nueva, mecanismo que se denomina memoria episódica.
"Es muy importante para un animal inteligente como el ser humano, porque sabe lo que está pasando a su alrededor y puede recordarlo luego", dijo Tonegawa.
