El túnel, cuya construcción tomó ocho años y 3.500 millones de dólares, reducirá el tiempo que necesitan los trenes para cruzar entre Alemania e Italia de tres horas y media a menos de dos.
El primer tren en cruzar el túnel fue un carguero que transportaba al ministro suizo de Transporte Moritz Leuenberger, que llegó a la ciudad de Frutigen, donde está la entrada norte del túnel. El tren pasó por un cartel que decía "Loetschberg -- Conectando Europa", ante los vitoreos de más de 1.000 personas y el estallido de fuegos artificiales.
Luego del viaje inaugural, un segundo tren transportó a periodistas y otros pasajeros hacia el sur, en un viaje apacible sobre rieles cubiertos de caucho para trenes de alta velocidad de Francia, Alemania e Italia.
Cuando el tren legó al otro lado, los viajeros fueron recibidos por centenares de niños en la ciudad de Visp, ondeando banderas y gritando "Bravo!".
Loetschberg es el mayor túnel terrestre del mundo, superando al Hakkoda en Japón, que mide 26,39 kilómetros. Pero es más corto que el túnel submarino Seikan, también en Japón,que tiene una longitud de 51 kilómetros y el túnel del canal de la Mancha, que mide 49,8 kilómetros.
