Un equipo de investigadores españoles del Instituto Neurológico Barrow en Phoenix (Estados Unidos) y de la Universidad de Vigo ha realizado un trabajo sobre una llamativa ilusión visual, llamada Enigma, en la que se percibe la ilusión de movimiento rotatorio dentro de una imagen estática.
Los resultados del estudio, que se publican esta semana en la edición digital de la revista Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), demuestran que ciertos movimientos microscópicos de los ojos denominados microsacadas contribuyen a nuestra percepción del movimiento.
De modo espontáneo
El cuadro Enigma, creado por el artista Isia Leviant, ha sido durante las dos últimas décadas el centro de un debate de más de 200 años sobre los papeles respectivos del ojo y el cerebro en la percepción de movimiento ilusorio dentro de ciertos patrones estáticos.
El grupo de investigadores liderado por Susana MartÃnez-Conde decidió examinar el papel de las microsacadas, un tipo de movimiento ocular microscópico e inconsciente que ocurre de manera espontánea cuando fijamos la vista, en la percepción de esta ilusión.
