El descubrimiento se realizó luego de haber sometido a algunos ratones a una dieta alta en grasas, la cual posteriormente fue sustituida por el ácido ursólico de la manzana.
Luego de realizar una prueba, se observó que los ratones a los que se les había administrado este suplemento, mostraban menos obesidad, menos signos de prediabetes y menos enfermedades hepáticas en comparación a los que no tomaron el compuesto.
Según los científicos, el ácido ursólico es una sustancia cerosa que se forma naturalmente en muchas plantas, entre ellas, el arándano, la lavanda, el orégano, las ciruelas, la menta y la albahaca, pero podemos encontrarla en mayor cantidad en la cáscara de manzana.
