El Bloodhound SSC se prepara para romper la barrera del sonido
Con un largo de 12,8 metros, 2,7 metros de alto y 6 toneladas de peso, el Bloodhound SSC podrá alcanzar casi 1700 kilómetros por hora, una velocidad equivalente o superior a la de muchos aviones de combate y cualquier avión comercial en operación.
El supercarro será propulsado por un cohete Eurojet EJ200 utilizado por el Eurofighter Typhoon, así como un cohete Falcon hybrid, juntos, ambos cohetes imprimirán 20,000 y 27,000 libras de impulso respectivamente.
El Bloodhound SSC, actualmente diseñado por Richard Noble, será conducido por Andy Green, piloto de la Royal Air Force. Ambos mantienen el récord mundial de velocidad en tierra con otro vehículo, el ThrustSSC, que alcanzó una velocidad de 1232 kilómetros por hora. En ese entonces, el ThrustSSC logró los 970 km/h en solo 16 segundos y fue el primer vehículo en romper la barrera del sonido.
Ahora, Green tiene como objetivo romper la barrera de las mil millas por hora (1609 km/h). Si tiene éxito, logrará superar 1,4 veces la barrera del sonido. Uno de los mayores logros de este proyecto será incentivar el interés de los jóvenes por la ingeniería.
